Tip: Mail order prescriptions (90-day supply) often cost less per dose than retail, saving you money on maintenance medications.
If you request a brand name drug when a generic is available and your prescriber does not write "dispense as written," you'll pay the difference in cost plus the applicable copay. Choosing generic can save you significant money.
Retail pharmacy (30-day): Best for short-term medications or when you need something right away.
Mail order (90-day): Best for maintenance medications you take regularly. You get a 3-month supply at a reduced per-dose cost.
Ask about generics: Generic drugs have the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs at a fraction of the cost.
Use mail order for maintenance meds: If you take a medication regularly (blood pressure, cholesterol, etc.), mail order saves money per dose.
